Chapter 77 - The Lioness

"I'm going to kill him right in front of you," Daniel sneered, raising his weapon. "And then I'm going to let you live with the pain."
Daniel pulled the trigger.
Elena fired at the exact same second.
The crack of the handgun and the burst of the submachine gun echoed simultaneously in the thunderous night.
Daniel’s bullet grazed Elena’s shoulder, a searing, white-hot line of agony tearing through her flesh. The impact knocked her backward onto the wet grass, her pistol flying from her grip.
But her shot had found its mark. Her 9mm round tore straight through Daniel’s thigh. He screamed, his leg buckling completely as he collapsed onto the muddy pathway.
Mateo shrieked, kneeling beside his mother.
"Mommy!"
"Run!" Elena gasped, clutching her bleeding shoulder.

Daniel snarled in pain, dragging himself across the mud, reaching for his dropped weapon. He grabbed the barrel, turning it toward the injured mother and her screaming child.
He prepared to fire the fatal burst.
