Chapter 28

Rosa's Daughter
Elena felt a wave of nausea wash over her. The sheer, calculating evil required to violate her body and use it as an incubator for a stolen fortune was incomprehensible.
"How did you find out about the baby?" Elena asked.
"Through Maria. Rosa's daughter."
Alejandro stopped pacing and looked at Elena.
"Beatriz thought she was so clever, hiding Maria away in an orphanage to blackmail Rosa into silence all these years. But when I began dismantling Beatriz’s shell companies a year ago, I found the blackmail payments. I rescued Maria and moved her to a safe house."
Elena covered her mouth, tears welling in her eyes at the thought of Rosa's quiet, lifelong suffering.
"Rosa didn't know Maria was safe," Elena whispered.
"No. I couldn't risk Beatriz finding out. But two days ago, Maria received a frantic, coded letter from her mother. Rosa wrote that Daniel was planning to murder his pregnant wife tonight because the baby was becoming a liability."
Alejandro’s gaze fell to Elena’s stomach.
"I bought a private jet and flew straight here. I broke the speed limit, ran red lights, and kicked down that door. I almost didn't make it."
"But you did," Elena said softly, reaching out her uninjured hand. "You saved us."

Alejandro gently took her hand, his thumb brushing over her bruised knuckles.
"I will never be late again."
