Chapter 24

The Arrest

The wail of police sirens finally pierced the night, growing louder until red and blue lights illuminated the street ten stories below. Heavy boots pounded down the hallway, and half a dozen armed police officers burst through the shattered doorway of the apartment.

"Drop your weapons! Nobody move!"

The lead officer shouted, his flashlight sweeping over the bloody, chaotic scene.

Daniel was writhing on the floor, cradling his broken wrist. Beatriz was still on her knees, hyperventilating in a state of absolute catatonic shock.

"Arrest them," the neighbor shouted, pointing a shaking finger at the mother and son. "They pushed that poor pregnant woman off the roof! We saw the whole thing!"

Officers immediately moved in, forcing Daniel onto his stomach and clicking cold steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists.

"This is a mistake! I am Daniel Valdés!" he screamed hysterically, spitting blood onto the floor. "That man assaulted me! Arrest him!"

Alejandro stood calmly near the balcony doors, shielding Elena and Rosa. He reached into his pocket and handed a thick stack of documents to the police captain.

"I believe you will find active warrants for fraud, attempted murder, and medical malpractice in that file, Captain," Alejandro said smoothly.

Beatriz began to weep uncontrollably as an officer hauled her to her feet, reading her Miranda rights. The era of the fake Valdés heirs had abruptly, brutally come to an end.
