Chapter 1 - The Fatal Push

The night wind howled on the rooftop of the luxury apartment building. The sky was pitch black without a single star, illuminated only by the lights from the bustling street ten stories below. Elena stood close to the edge, her breathing ragged, both hands clutching her swollen pregnant belly. She couldn't believe what had just happened. The woman standing before her, the noble Lady Beatriz, the mother-in-law who always appeared so dignified, had just reached out her cold hands and pushed her hard toward the abyss.
Flailing in mid-air, her survival instinct caused Elena to swing her arms wildly. A final stroke of luck allowed her to grab onto a nylon clothesline stretched across the empty space. The line trembled violently, pulled so taut it seemed ready to snap. The weight of a pregnant woman made Elena feel as though her arms were being torn from their sockets. Below her back was a dark, bottomless void where cars moved like tiny ants.

"Help! My baby!"
Elena screamed in despair. She used one hand to grip the thin rope tightly, while the other instinctively cradled her belly, where the tiny life shivered along with its mother. Whenever a strong gust of wind blew, her body swung in the air, and the old fabric fibers let out a chilling cracking sound. They were slowly breaking. Elena looked up with tear-filled eyes. She waited for a moment of panic, an apology, or an attempt to save her from her mother-in-law. But no, Beatriz was standing there, terrifyingly calm.
