Chapter 46 - The Safe House

The authorities swarmed the estate within minutes, but Alejandro knew the police could not protect them from a cartel boss. By 3:00 AM, the estate was empty.
Alejandro evacuated Elena, Mateo, and Rosa in an armored SUV, driving deep into the secluded mountains outside the city. They arrived at a heavy steel gate hidden among the pine trees, which opened to reveal a fortified, brutalist concrete safe house.
"It's not as beautiful as the mansion," Alejandro said, carrying the sleeping baby inside.
"It's perfect," Elena replied, looking at the thick, bulletproof glass windows.
Inside, the house was stocked with provisions, an independent generator, and an armory. Rosa, still shaken by the gunfire, immediately set up Mateo’s portable crib in the safest, windowless room in the center of the house.
"He knows we survived," Alejandro said, looking at the security monitors displaying the dark forest outside. "But he also knows he can reach us."
"How did they get past the perimeter at the gala?"

Elena asked, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders.
"They had the security codes," Alejandro replied, his eyes narrowing with a cold, terrifying realization. "Vargas has someone on the inside. Someone on my board of directors."
