The aftermath of the safe house breach left them shaken but unharmed. Rosa emerged from the panic room with Mateo, crying tears of relief as Alejandro hugged his son.
But as they sat in the dim light of the battery-powered lanterns, Alejandro's expression was grim.
"He sent his elite squad," Alejandro said, looking at the bodies being cleared out by his cleanup crew. "He thought I would be distracted at the docks. He underestimated you, Elena."
"He won't stop, will he?" Elena asked, holding Mateo tightly to her chest.
"No," Alejandro shook his head. "As long as Vargas breathes, he will view my refusal as an insult. He will keep sending men. He will keep trying to find a weakness."
Alejandro stood up, retrieving a heavy duffel bag from the armory. He began packing magazines, encrypted communication devices, and tactical gear.
"What are you doing?" Elena asked, standing up.
"Defense is no longer an option," Alejandro said, zipping the bag closed. "I can't wait for him to send the next team. I have to cut the head off the snake."
