Chapter 47 - Rosa's Insight


The next morning, the mountain air was thick with fog, isolating the safe house from the rest of the world. Elena sat in the kitchen, watching Mateo play with a wooden block on the floor.
Rosa brought her a cup of hot chamomile tea, sitting down across from her.
"You haven't slept," Rosa noted gently.
"Every time I close my eyes, I hear the glass shattering," Elena admitted, rubbing her tired eyes. "I thought we were done with this, Rosa. I thought the violence died with Daniel and Beatriz."
"Evil does not die, Elena. It only changes its face," Rosa said wisely. "But you have changed, too. You are not the frightened girl hanging from the balcony anymore. You are a mother. And mothers are the most dangerous creatures on earth when their children are threatened."
Elena looked down at Mateo, a fierce, undeniable protective instinct burning away her exhaustion.

"Alejandro is going back to the city today," Elena said. "He is going to find the traitor."
"Let him go," Rosa nodded. "He must protect the territory. And we will protect the home."
