Chapter 15 - The Kind Neighbor

The female neighbor was absolutely terrified, but human instinct overcame her fear. She rushed to the railing, thrust her hands through the gaps in the rusty iron bars, and desperately tried to grab Elena's pale, trembling wrists.

"Don't let go! Hold on, girl! I've got you!"

The warm hands of a stranger gave Elena a fragile ray of hope. Tears streamed from her eyes.

"Save... save us, please!"

The woman turned her face back into the house, screaming with all her might:

"Honey! Call 911 right now! Someone is about to fall off our balcony! Hurry!"

Elena felt a fraction of her burden shared, her fear slightly subsiding. But that relief lasted less than three seconds. From the front door of the apartment, loud, brutal pounding echoed, shaking the very walls.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

"Open the door!"

Daniel's voice roared like a wild beast from the hallway. He was frantically trying to break the door down.

"Open this damn door! My wife is on your balcony! Let me in!"

The woman startled, looking into the house, then back down at Elena's bruised, blood-drained face. She asked anxiously:

"That man out there... he says he is your husband? He is worried about you, right? My husband is going to open the door!"

"No!!!"

Elena used all her remaining strength to scream.

"Don't open the door! He isn't here to save me! He is the one who pushed us! He intends to kill all of us!"
