Chapter 2 - The Devil's Gaze

On the edge of the rooftop, Beatriz slowly stepped forward. She wore an expensive silk robe, its hem fluttering in the wind. There was not a trace of fear or remorse on that meticulously made-up face. Instead, the corners of her lips curled into a faint smile, her cold eyes looking down at her daughter-in-law struggling against death. Her calmness plunged Elena's heart into a bucket of ice water.

"No one will save you this time."

Beatriz's voice was steady, devoid of any emotional disturbance. Those words were like a knife stabbing straight into Elena's mind. She sobbed, her throat bitter with the inability to understand the reason leading to this tragedy. She had always been an obedient daughter-in-law, loving Daniel with all her heart and respecting the Valdés family.

"Why would you do this? It's your grandson!"

Elena screamed, hoping maternal love would awaken the humanity within that cruel woman. She pressed her hand tightly against her belly, where the life was growing day by day. But the only response to her plea was a look of absolute contempt. Beatriz scoffed coldly, her razor-sharp gaze piercing straight into Elena's womb.

That sentence carried a bone-chilling resentment. Elena was stunned. Should not exist? Why would a child carrying the bloodline of the Valdés family be cursed to death by his own grandmother?
