Chapter 51 - The Breach
At the mountain safe house, the storm had worsened, rain lashing against the reinforced concrete. Elena was in the kitchen preparing a bottle for Mateo when the lights suddenly flickered and died.
The backup generator did not kick in.
"Rosa!"
Elena shouted, running into the dark hallway.
"I have the baby!" Rosa called out from the panic room, holding a flashlight.
Elena ran into the master bedroom and opened the biometric safe hidden in the closet. Alejandro had insisted she learn how to use it. She pulled out a sleek, suppressed 9mm handgun, her hands trembling slightly as she checked the magazine.
A loud, metallic crash echoed from the front of the house. The heavy steel gate had been breached by an explosive charge.
Elena ran to the security monitors, which were still running on battery backup. Through the infrared cameras, she saw six heavily armed men moving silently toward the front door.
"Rosa, lock the panic room door from the inside," Elena ordered over the internal intercom. "Do not open it for anyone but me or Alejandro."
