Chapter 41 - The Obsidian Coin

The morning after their quiet moment on the balcony, the peace of the Valdés mansion was broken by a delivery. It was not a grand, dramatic event. It was simply a small, unadorned wooden box left at the front gates.

The head of security brought it directly to Alejandro’s study.

"It bypassed the postal logs, sir. Someone dropped it off personally before sunrise," the guard reported.

Alejandro dismissed the guard and stared at the box sitting on his mahogany desk. Elena walked in, carrying two cups of coffee, her smile fading as she saw the dark expression on his face.

"What is it?"

She set the cups down, stepping closer to him.

Alejandro did not answer immediately. He used a silver letter opener to pry the lid off the box. Inside, resting on a bed of black velvet, was a heavy, perfectly polished obsidian coin.

Alejandro’s breath caught. He closed his eyes, a muscle feathering in his jaw.

"Is it from Beatriz?"

Elena asked, panic instantly creeping back into her chest.

"No," Alejandro said, his voice cold and hollow. "Beatriz is locked in a cage. This is from Mexico. This is from the life I had to build to survive."
