Chapter 58 - The Long Wait

Back at the safe house in the mountains, Elena paced the floor. Two days had passed since Alejandro left for Mexico. The silence was agonizing.
Rosa tried to comfort her, cooking her favorite meals, but Elena could barely eat. Every time the wind howled against the windows, she flinched, expecting the worst.
"He is coming back, Elena," Rosa said firmly, rocking Mateo to sleep. "He promised you he would."
"I know he did," Elena whispered, looking out at the rainy forest. "But Vargas is a monster. And sometimes, monsters win."
"Not this time," Rosa smiled knowingly.
