Chapter 59 - The Return

The heavy steel gates of the safe house buzzed and opened just before dawn. An armored SUV drove slowly up the driveway.

Elena didn't wait. She ran out into the freezing rain, barefoot, ignoring the cold.

Alejandro stepped out of the vehicle. He looked exhausted, covered in mud from the jungle, with a deep cut across his cheek from his escape, but his eyes were bright and alive.

Elena threw herself into his arms, nearly knocking him over. He caught her, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe, burying his face in her neck.

"It's over," he whispered, his voice rough with fatigue. "It's truly over."

"You came back to me," she sobbed, kissing his face, not caring about the mud or the rain.

"I will always come back to you, Elena. Always."

He picked her up, carrying her back inside the warm, illuminated safe house. The nightmare was finally, permanently extinguished. The ghosts of the past, both from the mansion and the slums, had been laid to rest.
