Chapter 75 - Into the Dark
"Mateo, come here!" Elena coughed, her eyes burning from the toxic smoke.
She pulled her son to the edge of the dark hole.
"I need you to slide down this chute. It goes to the basement. I will be right behind you."
Mateo looked into the terrifying darkness and shook his head, crying. "I'm scared!"
"You are a Valdés!" Elena said fiercely, grabbing his shoulders. "You are brave. Go!"
Mateo nodded, closing his eyes, and slipped feet-first into the narrow iron chute. He slid rapidly down into the darkness. Elena immediately followed, the metal scraping against her arms and back as she plummeted through the space between the mansion's walls.
She tumbled out into a pile of dusty burlap sacks in the mansion’s lower sub-basement, coughing violently. Mateo was right beside her, bruised but unhurt.
Above them, they could hear the muffled sound of gunfire as the estate guards finally clashed with Daniel on the upper floors.

"We have to get outside," Elena whispered, grabbing Mateo’s hand.
They ran through the dark basement, finding the old servant’s exit that led directly out to the sprawling garden maze at the back of the estate.
