Chapter 7 - Falling into the Abyss

The rope snapped instantly. The dry sound echoed, severing all final rays of hope.
"No!!!"
Elena let out a gut-wrenching scream as gravity suddenly dragged her down into the pitch-black void. The force of the fall was so immense that Rosa, who was still using her last bit of strength to clutch Elena's wrist, was pulled along with her. Both women went into free fall from the ten-story rooftop. The wind howled in Elena's ears, cutting across her skin. In the brief moment of falling, her maternal instinct caused her to curl her body up, squeezing her eyes shut as she waited for a bone-shattering death.
But in that life-or-death second, Rosa did something extraordinary. The old woman twisted her body in mid-air, using her aged back to fully embrace Elena, trying to shield the young woman's belly as much as possible. She was willing to trade her own life for the baby's.

A horrific sound of impact rang out. They did not fall all the way to the asphalt. Instead, Elena's shoulder slammed hard into the concrete railing of the balcony on the floor directly below. A bone-piercing pain shot through her entire body. With the reflex of a drowning person catching a lifeline, Elena spread her arms wide, her ten fingers locking onto the cold iron bars of the railing. The sudden jolt made her shoulder joint let out a terrifying crack.
