Chapter 69 - The Dogs Bark

Inside the panic room, the thick concrete walls blocked out the noise of the storm. Mateo was asleep on the cot, his golden retriever puppy curled up at his feet.

Suddenly, the puppy's ears perked up. He stood, walking to the heavy steel door, and let out a low, continuous growl.

Elena’s blood froze. She looked at the wall of security monitors.

The exterior cameras showed the remaining guards patrolling the grounds, completely unaware of any breach. But when Elena switched the feed to the interior cameras, her heart stopped.

The camera in the grand hallway was dead. The feed from the main staircase was static.

Someone was systematically cutting the internal surveillance lines from inside the house.

"Rosa," Elena whispered urgently, grabbing the 9mm pistol from the safe box on the wall. "He's inside."

Rosa turned pale, clutching a heavy iron fire poker.

"The guards outside don't know," Rosa said, pointing to the screens.

"I can't radio them. The internal comms line goes through the central hub, which is blind," Elena realized, panic tightening her throat. "We are entirely on our own."
