Chapter 25

The Hospital

The bright, sterile lights of the emergency room were a jarring contrast to the darkness of the rooftop. Elena lay on a crisp white hospital bed, an IV drip attached to her arm, feeding her exhausted body fluids and painkillers for her dislocated shoulder.

The rhythmic, rapid thump-thump-thump of the fetal heart monitor filled the quiet room. It was the most beautiful sound she had ever heard. Her baby had survived the horrific ordeal.

She turned her head. Sitting in a chair by the window, watching her with a quiet, intense vigilance, was Alejandro. He had not left her side for a single second since the police arrived.

"How is Rosa?"

Elena asked, her voice raspy and weak.

"She has three broken ribs and severe bruising, but she will recover," Alejandro replied, his deep voice carrying a soothing warmth. "She is sleeping two rooms down. I have posted private security at her door."

Elena let out a long, shaky breath. She looked at the man sitting across from her, the stranger who shared her unborn child's DNA.

"Who are you, really?" she asked. "How did you find us just in time?"

Alejandro leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

"My name is Alejandro. And to understand how I found you, you need to know what Beatriz stole from me thirty-five years ago."
