Chapter 52 - Elena's Defense

The front door of the safe house exploded inward, a cloud of smoke and concrete dust filling the foyer. Two mercenaries stepped inside, sweeping their rifles with laser sights cutting through the dark.

Elena was hiding behind the heavy stone fireplace in the living room. Her heart pounded in her ears, deafeningly loud. She remembered Alejandro's instructions at the shooting range: Breathe. Don't pull the trigger; squeeze it.

As the first man stepped into the living room, scanning the shadows, Elena stepped out from cover. She raised the pistol with both hands, aimed at the center of his tactical vest, and squeezed the trigger twice.

The suppressed weapon coughed quietly. The man grunted, taking two rounds to the chest, and collapsed backward onto the floor.

"Contact!" the second man shouted, raising his rifle toward the fireplace.

Elena ducked back behind the stone just as a hail of bullets shredded the sofa and shattered the vases around her. She was pinned down, breathing heavily, gripping the hot pistol in her hands. She had taken one down, but there were five more.

She crawled along the floor, moving toward the hallway to bottleneck them. She would not let them reach the panic room.
