Chapter 43 - Strengthening the Walls
By noon, the Valdés estate had been transformed. Alejandro doubled the security detail, replacing the standard estate guards with private military contractors he had vetted personally.
Elena watched from the nursery window as black SUVs rolled up the driveway, men in tactical gear stepping out to secure the perimeter. Mateo was sleeping soundly in his crib, oblivious to the storm gathering outside his window.
Alejandro walked into the nursery, wrapping his arms around Elena from behind.
"I promised you that you would never have to fight again," he whispered into her hair. "I intend to keep that promise."
"We are in this together, Alejandro," Elena said, turning around to look him in the eye. "Daniel and Beatriz tried to destroy us from the inside. We beat them. We can beat a ghost from your past."
"Vargas isn't a ghost," Alejandro warned softly. "He is very real, and he is ruthless. He won't attack me directly. He will try to find my weakness."
