Chapter 10 - The Secret Daughter

Daniel's words were like a curse striking Rosa's fatal weak point. The old woman's body suddenly stiffened, absolute terror evident in her aged eyes. Elena looked down in shock at the loyal servant she had always respected.
"A daughter? You have a daughter?"
Elena couldn't believe it. For thirty years, Rosa had lived a secluded life inside the massive mansion of the Valdés family, working silently like a ghost. She had never mentioned having a family, nor had she ever complained or asked for time off to visit anyone. She always claimed she was a lonely orphan.
"I... I thought she died right after she was born..."
Rosa whispered, tears overflowing and mixing with the blood on her face. She had spent her entire life hiding that daughter from the dark forces of this family, certain that her cover was perfect. From above, Daniel's mocking laughter echoed triumphantly.
"She didn't die, Rosa. And my mother and I know exactly where to find that little brat. It only takes one phone call."
"Don't drag her into this dirty mess! I beg you! She is innocent!"
Rosa wailed tragically, her screams tearing through the night. Beatriz spoke up triumphantly:
"Then shut your mouth and behave. Or better yet, just let go and drag my daughter-in-law down to hell with you."
Rosa looked up at Elena. Her eyes were fiercely conflicted. If she loosened her legs and let herself drop into the abyss, Elena would lose a massive burden and might be able to pull herself up. But if she kept speaking, her daughter would die. Meanwhile, Elena felt her pinky finger slip from the iron bar. The sweat on her hands made the metal surface far too slippery. She bit her lip until it bled to endure the pain.
"Aunt Rosa... I need to know! What is the truth?"

"There is no more time, Elena... You have to save yourself..."
"Why do they want to kill my baby?! Tell me!"
