Chapter 76 - Emerging into the Night

Elena pushed open the heavy wooden cellar doors. The freezing rain washed over them, instantly clearing the smoke from their burning lungs.

They scrambled out onto the wet grass, running toward the towering hedges of the garden maze.

"Keep running, Mateo. Head for the perimeter wall," Elena ordered, pushing him ahead of her.

But as they rounded the first corner of the maze, a figure stepped out from the shadows, illuminated by a flash of lightning.

Daniel.

He was bleeding from a gunshot wound to his shoulder, sustained in his firefight with the guards, but he held his submachine gun steadily. He had known about the servant’s exit. He had anticipated her escape.

"You always were a survivor, Elena," Daniel panted, a manic gleam in his eyes. "But you ran out of luck."

Elena shoved Mateo hard behind her back, placing herself entirely between her son and the monster. She raised her 9mm pistol, her hands steady, the rain slicking her hair to her face.

"You are not touching him."
