Chapter 62 - The Midnight Call

The charity gala at the city’s grand museum was in full swing. Alejandro and Elena were dancing under the crystal chandeliers, the picture of elegance and power. Mateo was safely asleep back at the estate under the watchful eye of Rosa and the security team.

Alejandro’s encrypted phone vibrated in the inner pocket of his tuxedo. He recognized the specific, pulsing rhythm. It was the emergency line.

He pulled Elena closer, kissing her cheek before stepping back.

"I need to take this," he whispered, his eyes scanning the room out of habit.

Elena nodded, though a faint line of worry creased her forehead. Alejandro walked out to the quiet balcony and answered.

"Speak."

"Mr. Valdés, this is the Chief of Police," the voice on the other end was tense and breathless. "I am calling you before it hits the news. There was a riot at the federal penitentiary an hour ago. Three inmates escaped in a laundry truck."

Alejandro’s blood ran completely cold.

"Who?"

"Daniel Valdés is missing, sir. We have units mobilizing, but he is currently unaccounted for."

Alejandro hung up the phone. The beautiful music drifting from the ballroom suddenly sounded like a funeral dirge.
