Chapter 16 - Breaking the Door

Elena's warning sent a chill down the woman's spine. She hurriedly turned her head and shouted loudly into the house:

"Honey, don't open the door! Deadbolt it! And call the police too, tell them there is a murderer in the hallway!"

Outside, the pounding on the door grew increasingly frantic and violent. Daniel had lost all patience. Heavy, thudding kicks rang out continuously. The thick wooden door began to shake violently, its locks groaning.

"Open the door right now, you bastards! I'll kill all of you!"

Meanwhile, out on the balcony, the situation was deteriorating faster than ever. The pulling force from the neighbor was not enough to haul both of them up. Rosa, after Beatriz's brutal beating and severe physical exhaustion, was beginning to lose consciousness. Her bony hands wrapped around Elena's calves were loosening.

"Elena..." Rosa's voice drifted faintly in the wind.

"No, Aunt Rosa! Don't let go! Hold on, the police are almost here!"

"I can't hold on any longer... You have to let me drop... My weight will drag us both down to our deaths..."

"NO! I will never abandon you! You saved my life and my baby's life!"

Elena gritted her teeth, trying to bend her legs to keep the old woman from sliding off. Blood from her fingers began to trail down, staining the railing red. But Rosa merely smiled, a sad, peaceful smile.

"My whole life... I always wished I had a daughter as obedient and strong as you, Elena."

"Don't say goodbye! I beg you!"

Elena sobbed violently, shaking her head to refuse the old maid's sacrifice.
