Chapter 8 - The Protector Returns

Daniel arrived exactly on schedule, two weeks later.

He parked his sleek black SUV next to Caleb’s battered sedan. When Daniel walked up the porch steps, carrying a bag of fresh groceries, he stopped dead in his tracks.

Caleb was sitting on the wooden steps, whittling a small piece of driftwood with a pocket knife.

The two men stared at each other. Daniel, the lethal former enforcer who had dismantled an empire to save me, and Caleb, the brother whose kidnapping had started the entire war.

"You must be Daniel,"

Caleb said quietly, closing the pocket knife.

"And you are the ghost who finally came home,"

Daniel replied, his voice a low, respectful rumble.

"She told me what you did,"

Caleb stood up, meeting Daniel's intense gaze without looking away.

"You burned their world down for her."

"I would do it again,"

Daniel stated with absolute, terrifying sincerity.

Caleb nodded slowly, stepping aside to let Daniel pass.

"Thank you,"

Caleb whispered.

From the kitchen window, I watched the exchange. The two men who had defined the boundaries of my survival had finally met, and an unspoken, unbreakable pact of protection was silently forged between them.
