Chapter 52 - The Ambush

Almost immediately after my shots, the front living room window shattered inward. Three flashbangs were thrown into the room, emitting blinding white smoke and stinging fumes, completely obscuring my vision.
"Infrared goggles!" Daniel shouted.
I quickly pulled my night-vision goggles over my eyes. In the green-tinted world, I saw three figures rushing through the broken window. Daniel opened fire. The rhythmic crack of his rifle rang out, dropping the leader instantly. The two remaining gunmen scattered, hiding behind the sofa, firing wildly in our direction.
Wood, broken glass, and plaster showered the room. I stayed low, moving along the kitchen counter, hunting for an angle. One attacker was trying to flank Daniel through the hallway.
"Three o'clock, Daniel!" I yelled.
I leaned out, aiming precisely at the heat signature moving through the smoke, and squeezed the trigger. The attacker fell, a bullet through his leg. He groaned, struggling to fire back, but Daniel finished him with a precise shot.
The smoke began to clear. Four bodies lay motionless on the floor. But my intuition told me this was too easy.

"Where’s Kael?" I asked, scanning the room.
"He's not here," Daniel replied, checking a body. "This was just a probe. Kael used them to test our defenses."
