Chapter 59 - The Impact

My body slammed into the rusted corrugated metal. The impact knocked the wind right out of me. I rolled several times before crashing into an air vent. The crane collapsed into the empty lot nearby, sending up a massive cloud of dust and debris.

My ears were ringing, and my entire body ached as if it were being torn apart. My sniper rifle was long gone. I only had my small handgun left on my hip.

"Are you okay?" Daniel’s voice crackled through the distorted headset.

"I’m alive. A bit bruised," I replied, struggling to stand.

But before I could find my footing, a tall shadow stepped out of the fog onto the warehouse roof. Kael. He had predicted my landing trajectory. He didn't want to kill me with the explosion; he wanted to use me as bait.

Kael pointed his silver pistol directly at my head.

"Don't move," Kael said, voice cold. He touched his radio. "Daniel, good student. Come to the roof of Warehouse #2. I have your weakness here. Drop your weapons, or I’ll blow her brains out."

I looked at Kael, filled not with fear, but with raw fury.

"He won't surrender," I hissed.

"We shall see," Kael grinned evilly.
