Chapter 57 - The First Shot

Daniel’s declaration seemed to provoke Kael. He smirked, though his eyes remained as cold as glass.
"Love," Kael spat the word out as if it were poison. "It blinds the mind and slows the reflexes. I’ll prove it to you."
Kael waved his hand. Immediately, from behind the piles of scrap metal, five mercenaries armed with heavy weapons emerged, surrounding Daniel.
"Fire!" Daniel yelled over the radio.
I squeezed the trigger. The bullet tore through the fog, embedding itself in the skull of the gunman who was about to open fire on Daniel. He dropped instantly.
Chaos erupted. The remaining gunmen opened fire wildly toward Daniel. He rolled behind a massive ship engine block to take cover. Kael didn't fire; he just stood on the balcony, watching his former student fight, like a general watching an exercise.
"Cover me, I need to reach the stairs!" Daniel ordered.

I kept firing, taking down two more gunmen. The remaining ones began pinpointing my location. Sniper bullets started whizzing past my head, striking the steel around me.
"They’ve pinned me down!" I shouted.
