Chapter 55 - The Abandoned Shipyard

The fog swirled around the rusted shipping containers like ghosts. The smell of old metal, oil, and damp mold filled my nostrils. Pier #4 loomed ahead like the giant skeleton of a prehistoric monster.

I separated from Daniel, moving like a shadow toward the crane. I checked every steel ladder for tripmines. Fifteen minutes later, I was thirty meters up, setting up a sniper nest. I attached the infrared scope to my rifle and scanned the area.

"I’m in position," I whispered over the radio. "No heat signals in a five-hundred-meter radius. He’s hiding very well."

"I’m entering the main warehouse," Daniel’s voice came back dry.

Through the scope, I saw Daniel moving along the rusted corrugated wall. He stepped inside the massive, roofless warehouse. It was a chaotic mess of broken ship parts, snapped cranes, and deep shadows.

Suddenly, high-intensity floodlights flickered on from all four corners, blindingly bright, pointed straight at Daniel.

"Welcome home, Daniel," a voice boomed through the loudspeaker, dripping with cruelty.

I immediately aimed for the control room high above, but the windows were reinforced with steel.
