Chapter 64 - Mending Wounds

Once home, the house was still a mess from the previous night's raid. But the priority was Daniel's injury. I led him into the bathroom, turned on the bright lights, and opened a professional medical kit.
"Bullet passed through the soft tissue, no bone damage," I sighed with relief after inspecting the wound. "But I have to disinfect and stitch it."
"Do it," Daniel said, sitting on the edge of the tub, biting down on a thick towel.
I carefully cleaned the area, removed the debris, and began sewing the wound. My hands were steady. Having survived the night, I realized how resilient I had become. We had protected each other.
As I tied off the final knot, Daniel spat out the towel, exhaling a tired but satisfied sigh.
"Your needlework is getting better," he teased, his smile returning.

"Don't get used to it," I replied, wiping the blood from his chest. "Next time, try not to get shot."
We looked at each other in the mirror. Two bruised, exhausted people, but in our eyes was a deep, profound peace that no power on earth could ever steal again.
