Chapter 35 - The Rendezvous Point

The Pacific wind howled relentlessly against the crumbling concrete walls of the decommissioned artillery battery. The structure sat high on a jagged cliff overlooking the black, churning ocean. There were no lights. The fog had rolled in thicker, wrapping the abandoned military bunker in a suffocating, blinding gray veil.

Daniel killed the headlights of the SUV a half-mile down the forgotten access road. We approached the bunker on foot. Our boots made absolutely no sound against the damp gravel. My natural breathing was slow, my heart rate entirely controlled. We moved like phantoms, blending seamlessly into the dark environment.

We reached the massive, arched entrance of the primary gun emplacement. The interior was a cavernous void of raw concrete and deep shadows.

We stepped inside. The cinematic tension was absolute. There were no sudden movements. No weapons drawn prematurely.

At the far end of the bunker, framed by a massive rectangular gun slit overlooking the ocean, stood a solitary figure. He was facing away from us, looking out at the water. He wore an immaculate, tailored dark trench coat. He did not turn around when we entered. He simply stood with his hands resting casually behind his back.

"You are exactly on time, Hannah," the man spoke.

His voice was smooth, aristocratic, and layered with an arrogant, chilling calm. It echoed slightly off the concrete walls.

I stopped walking. Daniel stopped a half-step behind my right shoulder, his physical presence a lethal, immovable shield. I did not raise my voice. I did not demand answers.

"You went to a great deal of trouble to deliver a piece of driftwood," I murmured, my voice a flat, emotionless whisper that cut through the sound of the crashing waves.

The man slowly turned around.
