Chapter 79

A New Life
On a windy dawn nine months later, the newborn cry of a baby girl echoed in a small, light-filled hospital room.
Maya entered the world in the most peaceful way possible. There was no blood, no gunfire, only the steady beep of the heart monitor and the dedication of the local doctors.
Daniel sat by the hospital bed, holding me close, his eyes unable to leave the tiny life sleeping soundly in my arms. Her impossibly small fingers unconsciously curled around Daniel's rough index finger.
"Hello, Maya," Daniel whispered, his voice carrying an endless, boundless love. "Daddy's here."
