Chapter 33 - The Invitation

I stared at the coordinates. The numbers did not invoke fear; they ignited a cold, calculated furnace of retribution in my chest. I slowly handed the card to Daniel.

His eyes scanned the black ink. A microscopic tightening occurred at the corners of his jaw. He did not need to run the numbers through a computer to recognize the location.

"The old coastal artillery battery," Daniel stated quietly. "Ten miles north. It was decommissioned fifty years ago. Concrete bunkers. No cell reception. Only one road in and out."

"A kill box," I whispered.

"Or an interrogation room," Daniel corrected smoothly, slipping the card into his jacket pocket.

We did not debate the risks. We did not discuss calling federal authorities. The cinematic realism of our dynamic was rooted in the absolute understanding that the law had finished its job with Claire Whitlock. This new ghost, this remnant of her toxic legacy, required an entirely different jurisdiction. Our jurisdiction.

I turned away from the navigation console. My natural breathing remained flawlessly steady as I looked back out through the fog-covered windshield of the boat.

"Claire spent her entire life using proxies to do her dirty work," I murmured, my eye movement tracing the gray horizon. "She hired doctors, lawyers, and arsonists. This man is just another transaction on her ledger."

"He sent a toy from our burned house to terrorize a mother," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a lethal, chilling register. The micro-expression in his eyes was one of pure, unrestrained menace. "He severely miscalculated."

I offered a single, almost imperceptible nod. The invitation was accepted. We walked off the boat and faded back into the fog, moving with the quiet, terrifying purpose of an impending storm.
