Chapter 43 - The Garden of Rebirth

The garden behind the house was a project I had dedicated myself to over the past six months. It was not a landscape of manicured precision, but a wild, blooming sanctuary of local wildflowers, lavender, and citrus trees. I knelt in the dirt, my hands covered in dark, rich earth, pruning the overgrown lavender bushes.

The physical act of working with the soil was grounding. It was a direct, tactile connection to the present moment, entirely removed from the abstract, digital warfare of the past. Daniel stepped out onto the porch, carrying a glass of cold water. He watched me for a moment, his posture relaxed, his dark suit replaced by a simple linen shirt.

"You've been out here for two hours," Daniel murmured, walking down the steps to join me.

"I like the smell of the rain," I replied, looking up at him.

He didn't make me stop. He knelt in the mud beside me, his hands—the same hands that had held a pistol in a bunker—carefully helping me gather the cuttings. The cinematic realism of the moment was in the simplicity. We were rebuilding, not an empire or a corporate legacy, but a life. He reached out, his thumb brushing a smudge of dirt from my cheek.

"The roses are blooming," he said, nodding toward the trellis.

"They are," I whispered, feeling the warm sun on my skin. We were no longer hiding, and we were no longer hunting. We were simply growing.
