Chapter 13 - Fortifying the Castle

The realization that Richard Whitlock might still be alive shifted the paradigm from a psychological threat to an imminent, lethal siege.

Daniel completely abandoned his apartment in the city and moved into the coastal house that evening.

He brought three heavy duffel bags filled with tactical gear, ammunition, and motion sensors.

"The police cannot help us here,"

Daniel explained as he bolted heavy steel plates over the interior of the ground-floor windows.

"If Richard is alive, he has the capital to buy the local precinct. We are entirely on our own."

Caleb didn't argue. He spent the entire night helping Daniel set up perimeter alarms in the tree line surrounding the property.

I sat in the yellow nursery, holding Aaron tightly against my chest. I refused to let the fear consume me. I had survived the Whitlock mansion. I had survived the fire. I was a mother now, and I was going to protect my son with the absolute ferocity of a lioness.
