Chapter 50 - Turning the House into a Fortress

We spent the entire afternoon restructuring the house. The reinforced glass windows were lowered with steel shutters. Thermal traps and improvised explosive devices were installed along the beach path and the pine forest behind the house.
I checked the internal surveillance system, setting up blind spots that Kael could exploit. Every intelligence skill I had used to hack servers was now being applied to build a physical defense network.
"When do you think he’ll attack?" I asked while loading my fifth magazine.
"At night," Daniel replied, disassembling and cleaning his sniper rifle. "He likes the dark. He’ll cut the power, sever our communications, and strike when we’re most disoriented."
"We have a solar-powered backup generator. He can't cut all the power," I asserted.
Daniel nodded, but his face remained tense.
"Remember, Kael never acts alone if he isn't sure of victory. Most likely, he’s hired a team of mercenaries. Don't go easy on anyone."

As the last rays of sunset faded, the house plunged into silent darkness. We wore tactical vests, equipped headsets, and killed all the lights. We sat in the dark in the living room, back-to-back, each covering a different angle of the house.
And then, the waiting began.
