Chapter 34 - The Preparation

The armory beneath the coastal house was bathed in the harsh, blue glow of the tactical monitors. The heavy, soundproofed steel door was locked from the inside.
I stood at the stainless-steel workbench. The cinematic camera focused tightly on my hands. I did not move with frantic haste. I picked up a matte-black magazine, pressing the heavy, brass-cased 9mm hollow-point rounds into the spring with slow, methodical precision. The metallic click of each round locking into place was the only sound in the room.
Daniel stood across from me, securing a low-profile Kevlar vest beneath his dark tactical jacket. His movements were incredibly efficient, the physical manifestation of a man who had spent his life navigating violence.
"Caleb understands the protocol," Daniel spoke, his voice breaking the silence with a low, calm baritone. "The house will enter full lockdown at 21:00. The blast shutters will drop. If we do not transmit the all-clear code by midnight, he is to take Aaron to the secondary safehouse in the mountains."
"He understands," I whispered, sliding the loaded magazine into the grip of my pistol. I chambered a round with a sharp, definitive pull of the slide.
I holstered the weapon at my hip, concealing it perfectly beneath my dark coat. I walked to the heavy steel door, unlocking it with a quiet hiss of pressurized air.

Before stepping out into the night, we walked upstairs to the nursery. The room was softly lit by a small nightlight. Aaron was fast asleep, his chest rising and falling in a deep, peaceful rhythm. I walked to the edge of his crib. I did not cry. My facial expression softened into a profound, fierce maternal love. I leaned down, placing a microscopic, silent kiss on his forehead.
I would burn the world down to keep him safe.
