The Secret in the Drawer
That evening, after dinner, I sat on the living room sofa, holding a small box carefully wrapped in paper and a bow. My heart was racing, not out of fear, but from a profound happiness mixed with anticipation.
Daniel emerged from the bathroom, his hair still slightly damp. He sat down beside me, draping his arm over my shoulders out of indispensable habit.
"I have a present for you," I said, handing him the small box.
Daniel looked surprised. "My birthday isn't for another three months."
"Just open it," I encouraged.
He carefully untied the ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside lay a pair of pristine white baby socks, alongside a pregnancy test displaying two distinct red lines.
