Chapter 51 - Cat and Mouse

The clock struck 2:00 AM. The ocean roared, masking every tiny sound. I stared intently at the infrared camera feed on the tablet. Everything remained eerily still. This silence was Kael’s psychological weapon. He wanted us exhausted from tension before he struck.
Suddenly, the screen flickered and went black. A small-scale electromagnetic pulse (EMP) had been triggered. My tablet was dead.
"We’ve lost the camera system," I whispered into the intercom.
"They’ve started," Daniel’s voice came back cold and sharp. "Hold your position. Don't move until you have a clear target."
I crouched behind the stone kitchen counter, aiming my weapon toward the back door. A tiny click came from the lock. Seconds later, the hinges groaned. The darkness was total, but I sensed someone stepping in.
A tall shadow crept through the door. He moved as lightly as a ghost, holding a suppressed pistol. I held my breath. I waited.

As he stepped into the faint moonlight filtering through the skylight, I pulled the trigger.
Two gunshots shattered the silence. The mercenary collapsed to the floor without a sound. But it was only the beginning.
