Chapter 28 - The Ghost at the Door

"What are you doing here?"

Elvira’s voice was a harsh, defensive whisper. Her eyes darted nervously down the hallway, the micro-expressions of shame and fear flashing across her wrinkled face. She tried to close the door, but Camila calmly placed a gloved hand against the painted wood, stopping it with effortless strength.

"Let me in, Elvira."

Camila did not raise her voice. The quiet authority in her tone paralyzed the older woman. Elvira stepped back, allowing Camila to enter the cramped, depressing living room. The space was cluttered with cheap furniture—the only things Elvira could afford after the civil damages liquidated her fortune.

"Have you come to gloat?" Elvira sneered, attempting to summon her old venom, though her trembling hands betrayed her. "You took my house. You put my husband and son in cages. What more do you want from me, you filthy little maid?"

Camila stood perfectly still in the center of the tiny room. She looked around, her eye movement slow, processing the absolute ruin of the woman who used to force her to scrub marble on her knees.
