Chapter 23 - The Steel Box

Inside the briefcase was a small, rusted steel lockbox. It looked decades old, severely out of place among the modern, sterile documents of a federal auditor. Mateo handed it to her. The metal was cold against Camila's skin.
"The judge reviewed the contents," Mateo explained quietly. "They are outside the scope of the federal fraud case. They pertain to civil matters predating your employment with the Santillán family."
"What is it?"

"The truth about how you ended up in their house, Señorita."
Mateo offered a final, sympathetic look before turning around and walking back to his sedan. Camila stood on the porch, the ocean breeze suddenly feeling incredibly cold. She looked down at the steel box. There was no exaggerated gasp, no dramatic trembling of her hands. She simply carried it inside, her mind methodically preparing for whatever poison Don Arturo had left behind.
