Chapter 22 - The Auditor
Camila opened the front door before the man could knock. She stood on the porch, her posture perfectly straight, dressed in a simple, elegant linen dress. She did not offer a smile. She simply waited, her eye movement tracking his cautious approach.
"Señorita Camila?"
The man stopped at the bottom of the steps. He offered a respectful, deferential nod—a gesture she was still getting used to receiving.
"I am Mateo Vargas. I was the independent forensic auditor assigned by the federal court to liquidate Don Arturo Santillán’s remaining assets."
"The court proceedings concluded three months ago, Mr. Vargas."

"They did," Mateo replied, his voice low and serious. "But last week, during the demolition of the Santillán primary estate, the contractors found a hidden wall safe in Don Arturo's private study. The authorities seized the contents, but there is an item inside that the federal judge determined belongs entirely to you."
Mateo placed the heavy briefcase on the porch railing and popped the brass latches.
