Chapter 52 - The Blackout Protocol

The concussive blast from the breaching charge threw Olivia and Aris violently to the floor, the air instantly filling with thick, choking gray smoke and the deafening ring of the explosion.
Arthur was entirely unphased. Operating purely on lethal, ingrained muscle memory, he fired three rapid, suppressed shots into the blinding smoke before the tactical breach team could even establish a foothold in the doorway. Two heavy bodies hit the floor with a terrifying thud, the element of surprise violently shifting back to the defenders.
"Move! Now!" Arthur roared over the chaos, laying down a relentless barrage of covering fire to keep the remaining mercenaries pinned in the narrow hallway.
Olivia didn't hesitate. She scrambled to her feet, grabbing the heavy titanium payload drive and hauling Aris up by her jacket. They sprinted toward the rear of the apartment, kicking open the frosted glass window that led to the rusted iron fire escape. The freezing Geneva rain immediately soaked them, the slick metal stairs presenting a treacherous descent into the dark alleyway six stories below.
"Arthur, come on!" Olivia screamed, refusing to leave him behind.
"Go! Get the drive to Zurich!" Arthur shouted back, ejecting a spent magazine and slamming a fresh one home. A hail of return fire chewed through the drywall of the safehouse, showering him in plaster. "I will buy you the time!"
Olivia’s heart shattered, but she knew the brutal mathematics of survival. If the payload was captured, millions would die, and Aris's parents would be executed regardless. She turned and practically dragged Aris down the fire escape, their boots clanging loudly against the iron.
They reached the dark alleyway just as an armored black SUV aggressively turned the corner, its high beams cutting blindly through the rain. Olivia shoved Aris behind a dumpster, preparing to fight bare-handed if necessary.
But the passenger window rolled down to reveal Marcus, Olivia’s chief digital forensic investigator, gripping the steering wheel tightly.
"Get in!" Marcus shouted over the roaring engine. "Arthur sent an emergency ping to my secure line five minutes ago!"

Olivia and Aris dove into the backseat just as Arthur finally emerged onto the fire escape high above, laying down suppressive fire into the alley to keep the remaining mercenaries away from the vehicle.
"Drive!" Olivia commanded, her eyes locked on Arthur’s silhouette in the rain as the SUV tore out of the alleyway. The tires screeched against the wet asphalt, leaving the chaotic shootout behind. Olivia clutched the payload drive tightly to her chest, the cold metal pulsing with the weight of humanity's future. The battle for Geneva was over, but the war for Zurich had just begun.
