Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

Guests instinctively stepped aside as Vanessa descended the grand staircase. The fury burning across her face was so palpable, so intensely terrifying, that the polite conversations in her path instantly died away. The clinking of champagne glasses ceased.
She moved with the aggressive, unstoppable momentum of a storm.
Olivia saw her coming. Her breath hitched in her throat, but she did not back away. She planted her feet firmly on the polished floor, her hand instinctively rising to shield her growing stomach.
Vanessa stopped directly in front of Olivia, invading her personal space, radiating a suffocating heat of anger.
"You ruined my life!" Vanessa shouted, her voice echoing violently off the high, vaulted ceilings.
The string quartet abruptly stopped playing. The ballroom fell into a dead, horrifying silence. Hundreds of eyes turned to watch the confrontation.
"You stole everything that belonged to me!" Vanessa screamed, pointing a trembling, manicured finger inches from Olivia’s face. "The money, the legacy, this family! You are nothing but a gold-digging parasite!"
Olivia remained entirely calm. She looked directly into the older woman's furious eyes.
"I never took anything from you, Vanessa," Olivia said, her voice quiet but remarkably steady. "The truth is simply catching up to you. You did this to yourself."
Those calm, measured words only made Vanessa angrier. The lack of fear in Olivia’s eyes was the ultimate insult to a woman who demanded absolute submission.

"Shut up!" Vanessa shrieked, all pretense of high-society elegance completely evaporating.
She lunged forward. She didn't slap Olivia. She didn't grab her arm. Driven by pure, murderous intent, Vanessa raised both of her hands and shoved Olivia squarely in the chest with every ounce of strength she possessed.
