Chapter 28 - The Inside Man

While Max began her aggressive digital assault on Thorne’s offshore servers, Olivia and Miller focused on a much more pressing, immediate danger.

"Thorne knew about the panic room," Olivia paced the wooden floor of the cabin. "He knew my new burner phone number. He knew exactly how much liquid capital the foundation had. He didn't hack that information, Arthur. Someone gave it to him."

Miller leaned over the table, pulling up the employee manifests for the foundation. "You think there is a mole inside your inner circle?"

"It’s the only logical explanation," Olivia said, her heart breaking at the thought of being betrayed by someone she trusted. "Who has access to the architectural blueprints of the penthouse, the security protocols, and the foundation's banking authorization codes?"

Miller filtered the database, cross-referencing security clearances. "There are only three people with that level of unrestricted access. Me, your executive assistant Chloe, and your chief financial officer, Marcus Vance."

Olivia stared at the name. Marcus Vance. He had been a brilliant accountant who had helped her untangle the mess of the Harrington estate after Vanessa’s arrest. He had seemed so passionate about the foundation's charitable mission.

"Pull Marcus’s recent financial records," Olivia ordered, a cold knot forming in her stomach. "Look for any anomalies."

Miller tapped the keyboard rapidly. Within minutes, he found the smoking gun.

"Two weeks ago, a shell company registered in Cyprus paid off Marcus’s massive, underwater mortgage on his summer home," Miller revealed, his voice laced with disgust. "The shell company is a known subsidiary of Thorne’s syndicate. Marcus sold you out for a house."

"He sold out my son," Olivia corrected, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly soft whisper. "Where is Marcus right now?"

"According to his phone's GPS, he's at the foundation headquarters in the city. He’s probably monitoring the accounts to see if you authorize Thorne’s transfer."

"Get a tactical team ready," Olivia said, grabbing her coat. "I am going to have a little chat with my CFO."
