Chapter 46 - The Midnight Breach

The abandoned freight terminal on the outskirts of Geneva was a sprawling, rusted labyrinth of shipping containers and decaying concrete. The freezing rain poured relentlessly from the black sky, turning the ground into a slick, treacherous hazard. Arthur had insisted that Olivia remain at the hotel, but she absolutely refused to let him face Elias Blackwood’s mercenaries alone. She had promised to protect this legacy, and she would not lead from the rear.

They arrived in a heavily armored SUV, cutting the headlights a mile away to avoid detection. Arthur, armed with a suppressed tactical sidearm, took point, sweeping the perimeter with thermal optics. Olivia followed closely, her heart pounding with a familiar, terrifying rhythm, yet her mind remained entirely clear and focused.

"I have two heat signatures on the roof of the primary warehouse," Arthur whispered into his comms unit, gesturing for Olivia to stay low behind a rusted container. "Professional overwatch. Blackwood’s hunters are already inside the grid."

"Aris said she was hiding in sublevel three of the old administrative building," Olivia whispered back, pointing toward a crumbling, brutalist structure fifty yards away. "We have to bypass the snipers."

Arthur nodded, retrieving a small, cylindrical device from his tactical vest. He hurled it high over the shipping containers toward the far side of the terminal. The device detonated with a blinding flash and a deafening array of simulated automatic gunfire.

The thermal signatures on the roof instantly pivoted, completely distracted by the auditory decoy.

"Move!" Arthur commanded.

Olivia and Arthur sprinted across the open tarmac, the freezing rain masking their footsteps, and dove through the shattered glass doors of the administrative building. They navigated the pitch-black, debris-filled corridors, descending the concrete stairwell into the absolute darkness of the subterranean levels.

They found Dr. Aris Thorne huddled in the corner of a flooded utility closet, clutching a heavy titanium hard drive to her chest. She was trembling violently, her eyes wide with sheer terror.

"We are with the foundation," Olivia said softly, kneeling beside the terrified woman and offering her hand. "You are safe now, Aris. We are going to get you out of here."

"You don't understand," Aris cried, refusing to let go of the drive. "Blackwood doesn't just want the drive back. He wants to ensure I can never testify. His men have orders to completely level this facility."

As if on cue, the heavy concrete ceiling above them groaned violently. A massive, deafening explosion rocked the upper levels of the administrative building. Dust and debris rained down upon them as the structural integrity of the facility began to catastrophically fail. Blackwood wasn't just hunting a whistleblower; he had authorized a tactical demolition to bury the truth under a thousand tons of concrete.
