Chapter 13 - The Motive

As the night faded into dawn, Olivia lay awake in her hospital bed, staring out the window at the rising sun. The terror of the fall was beginning to fade, replaced by the reality of why she had taken such a massive risk.
It had all started exactly one year ago, when her husband, David Harrington, died in a sudden, suspicious car accident.
David was Vanessa’s stepson. He had always been the moral compass of the corrupt family. Shortly before his death, David had discovered that Vanessa was systematically embezzling millions of dollars from the employee pension funds of the Harrington Corporation. He had planned to go to the authorities, but he died before he could make the call.
When the will was read, Vanessa realized to her absolute horror that David had left his massive, controlling shares of the corporation entirely to Olivia and their unborn child.
If Olivia inherited those shares, she would have full access to the corporate ledgers. She would immediately see the massive, glaring holes in the pension funds. Vanessa’s fraud would be exposed instantly.
Vanessa had tried everything to stop her. She offered Olivia a massive cash buyout. When Olivia refused, the threats began. Strange cars parked outside her apartment. Anonymous, terrifying phone calls in the middle of the night. Her credit cards were suddenly frozen.

Vanessa was trying to starve her out, trying to terrify her into surrendering the inheritance.
But Vanessa had severely underestimated her. She assumed Olivia was a fragile, grieving widow who would crumble under the pressure. She didn't realize that a mother fighting for her child’s future is the most dangerous opponent in the world.
