Chapter 2 - The Emerald Gaze

From the shadows of the second-floor balcony, an elegant woman in a shimmering emerald gown stared down at the ballroom floor. Her eyes were fixed on Olivia with an unmistakable, burning hatred.

Her name was Vanessa Harrington.

Vanessa was the matriarch of the family’s corporate empire, a woman who had spent her entire life believing that power and money gave her the absolute right to control everyone around her. Her emerald dress caught the light of the chandeliers, making her look like a venomous serpent coiled high above its prey.

She tightened her grip on the intricately carved wooden balcony railing. She squeezed the polished wood so hard that her knuckles turned a stark, bone-white.

Down below, Olivia was smiling at a guest, gently resting her hand on her pregnant stomach. The sight made Vanessa’s blood boil with a toxic, uncontrollable rage. That unborn child represented the end of Vanessa’s absolute control. It represented a shift in the massive family inheritance, a disruption to the illegal financial empire she had spent decades secretly building.

Olivia was not supposed to be here. She was supposed to have been frightened away months ago. She was supposed to have taken the buyout money and vanished into obscurity.

"You think you have won," Vanessa whispered to herself, her voice trembling with dark fury. "You think you can just walk into my house and take what is mine."

The string quartet below shifted into a faster, more dramatic tempo, perfectly matching the rapid, furious beating of Vanessa’s heart.

Without warning, the last thread of Vanessa's self-control snapped. She shoved away from the wooden railing, the silk of her emerald gown snapping sharply as she turned. She stormed toward the grand, sweeping staircase, her eyes entirely devoid of reason, completely consumed by the desperate need to destroy the woman standing below.
