Chapter 5 - The Maid's Intervention
One trembling hand instinctively rose from the floor, resting protectively over her stomach. The other hand struggled weakly, trying to push against the cold, unforgiving marble.
High above, standing on the landing of the staircase, Vanessa Harrington did not look horrified by what she had just done. She looked completely unhinged.
She pointed a shaking finger down at the broken woman on the floor.
"She deserved it!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking with manic rage. "She brought this on herself! Make her apologize to me! Make her admit what she did!"
A young, frightened maid named Maria, who had been carrying a tray of empty glasses near the stairs, watched the scene unfold in absolute disbelief. But when she heard Vanessa screaming those cruel, heartless words, something inside the young worker snapped.
Maria dropped her tray and lunged forward. She immediately grabbed Vanessa’s arm with both hands, pulling her back from the edge of the stairs.
"Please stop!" Maria pleaded, tears streaming down her face. "What are you doing? She’s pregnant! You could have killed them both!"
Vanessa whipped her head around, glaring at the maid as if she were a piece of dirt on her shoe.
"Let me go, you stupid girl!" Vanessa snarled, trying to violently pull her arm away. "You don’t understand anything! She is trying to destroy my family!"

"I don't care who she is!" Maria shouted back, holding on with all of her strength, refusing to let the wealthy woman take another step toward the victim. "You pushed a pregnant woman! You're crazy!"
Vanessa struggled, raising her other hand to strike the maid, but Maria dug her heels into the floor, anchoring the furious woman to the landing, desperately preventing the monster from finishing what she had started.
