Chapter 22 - The Shadow Syndicate

Captain Arthur Miller arrived at Olivia’s high-security penthouse within twenty minutes, accompanied by two undercover tactical officers. He didn't bother taking off his coat as he marched into her living room, his eyes scanning the space for any immediate threats.
Olivia handed him the photograph. Miller stared at the crosshairs over David’s face, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.
"This lens," Miller said, his voice grim. "This is military-grade optics. Whoever took this was at least eight hundred yards away. They bypassed all the community center's perimeter security without tripping a single alarm."
"Who is it, Arthur?" Olivia demanded, pacing the floor while David slept soundly in his fortified nursery down the hall. "Vanessa is serving forty-five years in a supermax prison. Her entire board of directors was indicted. Who is left?"
Miller sighed heavily, rubbing the back of his neck. "When we dismantled the Harrington corporate empire, we seized billions in assets. But Vanessa was always running money through offshore shell companies. We assumed she was just hiding it for herself."
"But she wasn't?"
"No," Miller admitted, pulling up a classified file on his tablet. "There was a shadow partner. A phantom billionaire who operated entirely in the dark, using the Harrington corporation to launder massive amounts of illegal syndicate money. His name is Elias Thorne. When you liquidated your late husband’s shares and gave that wealth to charity, you didn't just ruin Vanessa. You essentially burned Elias Thorne’s entire money-laundering machine."
Olivia stopped pacing, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering city skyline.

"He wants his money back," Olivia realized, her voice cold.
"He wants to make an example out of you," Miller corrected softly. "Men like Thorne don't just want their money. They want to ensure no one ever dares to cross them again. Pack a bag, Olivia. You and David are moving to a federal safehouse tonight."
