Chapter 48 - The Board of Shadows

While Olivia and Arthur secured the whistleblower, Elias Blackwood sat in the absolute, pristine silence of his opulent Zurich office. The room was a masterclass in psychological intimidation, decorated with priceless, dark antiquities and offering a panoramic, god-like view of the Swiss Alps. He was not a man prone to panic, but the blinking red notification on his secure terminal was an entirely unwelcome anomaly.
His chief of security, a massive, silent ex-mercenary named Vance, stood rigidly by the mahogany door.
"The demolition of the Geneva freight terminal was successful, sir," Vance reported, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "The local authorities have attributed the collapse to a catastrophic structural failure due to a ruptured subterranean gas line. The area is entirely quarantined."
Elias swirled a glass of expensive, blood-red wine, his icy gaze fixed on the mountain peaks. "And Dr. Thorne? Was her body recovered from the wreckage?"
"We could not confirm the kill, sir," Vance admitted, a rare note of hesitation in his voice. "Our thermal overwatch reported interference from a series of tactical decoys moments before the detonation. It is highly probable that Olivia Miller’s extraction team successfully breached the perimeter and evacuated the asset before the collapse."
Elias slowly lowered his wine glass, the polished crystal clinking softly against the heavy wood of his desk. The terrifying, unshakeable calm that usually defined him fractured for a fraction of a second, revealing the absolute monster beneath.
"You allowed a bleeding-heart mother and her bodyguard to outmaneuver an elite tactical unit and extract the single most dangerous liability to this company?" Elias asked, his voice a lethal, silken whisper.
"They are highly trained, sir," Vance defended carefully. "Arthur is a former specialized operative, and Olivia Miller has proven incredibly resourceful."
"I do not pay you to provide excuses regarding her resourcefulness!" Elias roared, slamming his fist onto the desk with terrifying force. He stood up, smoothing his tailored suit jacket, instantly regaining his icy composure. "If Aris Thorne is alive, she has the titanium drive. If Olivia Miller decrypts that drive, she will not just clear the name of her pathetic AI; she will have enough evidence to put this entire board of directors in front of a global tribunal."

Elias walked over to a secure wall safe, unlocking it with a biometric scan. He pulled out a thick, black dossier.
"Olivia Miller believes she is fighting a noble war for the survival of humanity," Elias sneered, tossing the dossier onto the desk. "It is time we remind her that this is not a fairy tale. Find their safehouse. Do not attempt another localized assassination. Burn the entire block to the ground if you must. Bring me that drive, Vance, or I will ensure you are the one buried in the rubble."
